Prostate Pedallers Blog

Perfectly Polite Pedallers

In all walks of life you meet people with very different personalties and outlooks. The Pedallers encounter many people on their extensive touring of the various towns and countryside we cycle through. Luckily, amongst the hikers, the dog walkers, the horse riders, the other cyclists, the ramblers and the joggers, the majority are prepared to nod acknowledgement of our friendly Pedaller greeting, smile or even stop and chat.

Today's encounters were a mixed bag with some very friendly, jovial ladies on horses and some lovely smiling dog walkers that were balanced out by some walkers prepared to ignore our cries of 'good morning!' and a very stroppy jogger who accused us of getting in his way despite us giving him a very wide berth! Oh well, variety is the spice of life...and we all have off days right? Our spirits will not be dampened and we will continue to greet people we pass with a smile!

Anyway, back to the cycling and the coffee and the cakes. We like to remind people that we are a support group that cycles rather than the other way round. While the cycling as a form of exercise is important for any prostate cancer sufferer, the support element is vital. It's a safe place to discuss symptoms, treatments, medication and emotions. Today was no exception and we were lucky that the ride was enhanced by beautiful blue skys and a welcome break from the rain.

The frost on the ground at 9am was a signal to layer up. Ivan was being tough and sported shorts, maybe a refusal to accept that we were facing winter conditions in early October! We set off for a 16 mile tour around Harpenden that took us up to the southern extremities of Harpenden Common Golf Club and then winding our way back through West Common, Rothamsted Experimental Station, the steep climb up Kinsbourne Green Lane and the lovely final descent on the Nickey Line back to Oval.

A great chat ensued with coffee and cake and we were joined by our new member Steve who is itching to cycle with us but treatment and a sprained ankle were preventing him taking part. It won't be long until the ankle mends itself and the Wednesday Wobblers is the perfect group to regain fitness and stamina.

We were also blessed by Mark's appearance who turned up unexpectedly following a roadie outing.

A great morning and so good to catch up and see new members joining the group.
