Pedallers Push On!
With a noticeable change in hours of light and even sunshine recently, it was a great day to wake up and see the sun sneaking through the blinds. It makes it so much easier to get out of bed!
The Pedallers first step this morning was to select their bike of choice for today's ride and then make their way to the Oval - some cycling and others with their prized possessions in the boot of their car. The much used phrase a seasoned cyclist is heard saying is 'the number of bikes you need is X + 1, X being the number of bikes you currently have'. I remember my oncologist, a keen cyclist, telling me that at one of our earlier meetings in my cancer journey. And with that encouragement I went out and bought my second bike with the knowledge that when my wife complained I could blame my consultant!
With commitments, blood tests, treatments, hospital visits and general life stuff, it's not always easy getting a group of Pedallers together mid-week. However, today saw an eight strong group assemble all chomping at the bit to get riding in the sun. One of the (many) great things about the Pedallers is we don't race; it's not about speed. It's all about getting out of the house, getting some fresh air and some exercise. Just as vital is the company and the social aspect of the group. It's all so important for mind and body and today was no exception.
Tailoring the ride for today's riders, we headed off on a 10 mile round trip to Redbourn and then back past Knott Wood and through Rothamsted. We stopped to admire the Manor and grab a few pictures before heading back though the Avenues to the Nickey Line and the Oval Café.
We kept our eye on our watches as we had planned to meet Raj back at HQ. Raj, a new member got the usual friendly Pedaller welcome and a lively chat ensued about our shared and unique PCa journey experiences. While we welcomed Raj we also said our farewells to Steve who, in his relatively short time with us, had become a great Prostate Pedaller and friend. He will be missed as he heads off to Yorkshire, his new home. We will meet up again for sure.
Coffees and the customary cakes were consumed as we discussed everything from tips and tricks for both bikes and coping with Pca side effects, from new members to old members and from Chicksands adventures to past and future France and Italy trips.
What a fine crew! Today really was a great day to be a Prostate Pedaller.
