Pedallers Hit The Trails
The Pedallers woke up to a cool morning and, after an Oval meet up, headed off towards Redbourn. The day had been planned; a route up to Whipsnade with a stop off and then head back down to Harpenden in the afternoon.
Smart phones have been part of our lives for many years but we still appreciate the technology. There are many apps that help you plan, track and share your rides and these always help the group discover new routes. Today was no different and Komoot was loaded up and helped track a new route out of Redbourn. The morning's ride comprised of a vast amount of off road trails which looked spectacular as the sun came out and lit up the tracks through the trees.
Mikey, still reeling from his inaugural 8 mile and second 11 mile ride, was taking on the generally uphill route to Whipsnade with confidence and gusto! This was a faster pace and an altogether different ride from the past 2 weeks. A few stops were taken on the way. Getting some breath back and taking on some water (as well as losing water!) were quite important as the temperature started to increase.
The final 100 meters to our destination can easily finish off a Pedaller as there is a sudden uphill section and, although short, can often be the straw that breaks the camel's back. However, not today as Mikey arrived at Charles' house tired but triumphant after the c12 mile cycle. We were not about to mention the fact that we had a further 15 or so miles to cycle back home! Why ruin the moment and cup of tea and cake provided by Charles. Unable to join us for rides at the moment due to treatment, our host gathered us on his verandah in the sun to catch up on all things Pedaller, from health to past rides to planned rides and even walks in the Peak District. So much to look forward to and great to hear that Charles should soon be back in the saddle and gaining strength after a gruelling 6 months.
The heat was picking up and with the temperature topping out at 25 degrees and Sam the dog taking far too much interest in Tony, we mounted our bikes and headed off past the stunning Dunstable Downs and then the descent into Dunstable picking up considerable speed on the way. A few more water stops and photo opportunities were had as we worked our way through the busway into Luton. Mikey still pushed on even up the last few hills and Jim, Andy, Ivan, Dave and Tony were impressed with his stamina and determination. A true Pedaller in the making!
Hitting the Lea Valley disused railway line meant we were nearing home and what got us all up the final hill to the Oval was the thought of some refreshments and maybe some more cake. The 28 mile round trip was completed and we sat in the sun outside the Oval Café and chatted and laughed for a good hour or so. It was now around 4pm so time to make our way back to our homes and for Tony to start his 15 mile cycle ride back.
A proper, thoroughly enjoyable Pedaller day which had everything and ticked all the boxes. A varied route taking us through excellent trails, single tracks, fields, cycle paths and a sprinkling of roads. A catch up with Charles, top notch company, coffee, ginger beer and cake. Oh, and not forgetting the cherry on the cake - the top drawer weather. Today was a great day for both mind and body - well done all..!
