Pedallers Don't Let Their Cancer Define Them
Our group are proof that you don't have to let cancer hold you back or slow you down. In fact many of our members have got fitter and stronger following their diagnosis by learning to cycle or getting back in the saddle.
There are so many reasons why we cycle; it's low impact, you get outdoors, you get to share your experiences and it's great fun. As a group we wax lyrical about the many benefits. However, let's not forget the huge importance of exercise for any cancer patient. I read an interesting article earlier this week that mentioned research carried out by the British Journal of Sports Medicine in January 2025. They analysed 42 studies with around 47,000 patients with various types and stages of cancer. The study concluded that there was a definite link between muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness, and a significantly lower risk of death.
Quoting from the article:
'Muscle strength was tested via handgrip, and cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed using either a static bike test or a six-minute walk test. Those with good muscle and cardio fitness were 31-46% less likely to die from any cause than those without. And each higher degree of fitness yielded a greater return in terms of reduced likelihood of death'.
There have been significant advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment which is obviously encouraging news but the treatments can be toxic and the side effects can impact the heart and muscles reducing the chance of survival.
So...this is where the Pedallers and cycling shine. Not only do we benefit from the support, camaraderie and the beautiful outdoors, we are also mitigating the effects of our treatment and helping fight our disease.
The positivity that the Pedallers brings is infectious and it has helped many men regain their strength, confidence and sense of self. And not forgetting a sense of humour - a vital component of life as a Pedaller!
