Harpenden, Childwickbury, St Albans Loop

 

Today was a Prostate Pedallers first with all riders sporting e-bikes. A Cube, a Canyon and a Trek all set off from the Oval this morning. A new route was planned which took the trio via Childwickbury towards St Albans. Veering off into a dense wooded area just before Batchwood Golf Course we encountered our first taste of mud.

 

Another opportunity to discuss the recent 'Summer' weather! The woodland trails were still full of thick mud in places which in previous years would have dried out in April or May. We powered through the mud and emerged from the wood for some hydration and a chat abour our various on bike tech. There's always scope for adding more techno 'stuff' to your bike and we have our very own Director of Tech, Tony or 'Gadget' as he is more commonly referred to!

 

The e-bikes we were riding enabled us to complete our 14 mile ride in relatively quick time - we managed to go further than we would normally have been capable of in the time we had - and we still had a very good workout some of which was in the sun!

 

After 14 miles, we cycled back to the Oval Café for a coffee, cake and a good chat. We laughed out loud at some of the items discussed, one being a doctor's orders. While the Pedallers have been subjected to very difficult and negative conversations at our surgeries and hospitals, there had been some positivity when a Pedaller was ordered, due to back issues, to avoid hoovering and shopping! As you can imagine these orders were followed to the letter.

 

While we often take on what might seem as long rides, we do cater for all levels of ability and fitness and the rides are tailored this way. Many of our members were new to bikes or had not ridden for 30 or 40 years. Others were recovering from treatment and the Wednesday rides in particular have been a great way for Pedallers to regain confidence and fitness at their own pace.
