Fresh Start to 2025
Well...fresh may be a slight understatement. A 9.30am start from The Oval in Harpenden meant freezing temperatures and chattering teeth. It was bitterly cold and most of the Pedallers had layer after layer of clothes and jackets on to fend off the chill. Cold weather, however, is mere folly for a robust Pedaller and we headed off down the Nickey Line in an attempt to get blood pumping and some body heat!
With Mikey back from treatment (wearing short sleeves to our befuddlement!) and Richard out on his inaugural Pedaller ride we were a 7 strong crew. We headed away from the old railway line at Hemel and hit the roads. These were icy roads and not for the faint hearted. Black ice was in abundance and many sections were akin to an ice rink.
We navigated the conditions fairly successfully it has to be said but, with hindsight, staying off road would have been a much better option! Hands and toes were getting cold and difficult to warm so a very welcome stop at The Hub in Redbourn was taken where hot coffee and a smattering of lemon drizzle cakes were consumed. The wonderful owners also provided a warm towel for Jim who was suffering just a tad with the the freezing temperatures.
We shared some cycling tips and then were back on our bikes for the gradual hill back to cars at The Oval. It would have been so easy to stay in bed or with our feet up at home but it was great to get out and get some air in our lungs after a prolonged absence due to the recent festivities.
Well done to all and particularly to Mikey and Richard who are getting their cycle legs back after treatments.
